Our Mandate

UPRS protects, licenses, collects, and distributes royalties for copyrighted musical works on behalf of its members and represented rights holders.

What UPRS Does

The Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) typically performs several important functions in copyright administration. It monitors when, where, and how its members’ works are used. It negotiates tariffs and licensing terms with commercial music users. It licenses the use of copyrighted works on behalf of its members and other rights holders it represents. It also collects royalties from music users and distributes them to the respective rights holders, helping ensure creators receive fair value whenever their work is used commercially.

Royalty Collection and Distribution

UPRS collects royalties through licensing agreements with various music users. These licenses cover all forms of music usage, including digital streaming, broadcasting, public performances, and reproductions. The society then distributes royalties to its members whenever their music is performed, broadcast, streamed, downloaded, reproduced, or used in films and television.
