UPRS Membership Benefits

About Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS)

Founded in 1985, the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS) is a non-profit organization formed by musicians and other authors to manage music copyright in Uganda. Registered as a company limited by guarantee (with no share capital), UPRS is owned by its members and recognized by the Government of Uganda as the national music collecting society. It is also a member of CISAC—the global network of authors’ societies.

Who Can Join?

Membership is open to all creators of original music or music videos. Proof of authorship—usually a recording—is required. Members sign an agreement that allows UPRS to manage their rights and royalties, freeing them to focus on creativity.

What UPRS Does

Licensing & Royalty Collection

UPRS licenses music users such as broadcasters, venues, and digital platforms, collects royalties, and distributes them to members and international affiliates.

One-Stop-Shop for Music Users

Through global partnerships, UPRS provides a single license that gives access to a wide international repertoire of music.

Efficient Rights Management

UPRS manages rights collectively, giving creators stronger negotiation power and ensuring fair compensation.

Reducing Copyright Infringement

UPRS helps reduce piracy by authorizing music use and working with government and international copyright bodies.

Fair & Transparent Distribution

Royalties are distributed based on actual usage—ensuring every creator is paid fairly for their work.

Music Usage Monitoring

UPRS tracks where and how music is used to ensure accurate reporting and payments.

Member Education

Regular workshops and outreach programs help members understand their rights and grow their careers.

Access to Creative Works

Licensing ensures legal and easy access to diverse music for audiences across platforms.

Democratic Governance

Members vote in General Meetings, elect leadership, and influence decisions within UPRS.

Legacy & Succession Rights

Royalties can be collected by beneficiaries for up to 50 years after a member’s passing.

Note: All revenues—after operational costs—are returned to members, reflecting UPRS’s non-profit nature.
